Dave’s love for animals and nature is evident in his work. Whether depicting family pets, wildlife, or the occasional landscape, he pours his heart and soul into each piece. He pays particular attention to the eyes of animals, believing they reveal the essence, emotions, and personality of his subjects. Through his art, Dave aims to give a voice to those who cannot speak and to highlight the preciousness of nature in our lives.
Primarily working in his studio in Nottingham, England, he has had a passion for art since childhood. This was reignited in 2008 after inheriting his mother’s watercolour art materials, which led him on to explore a variety of mediums, including pencils, watercolours, acrylic and oil paints.
Dave is always keen to try different mediums, surfaces and techniques to expand his practice and enjoys discovering anything new.
Dogs have always been a significant part of Dave’s life. His long walks with them, combined with his interest in photography, often provide reference photos and inspiration for his artwork. Dave deeply values the special relationships we have with our pets and recognizes their importance as family members.
Coloured pencil allows Dave to achieve an uncanny attention to detail, and his drawings showcase accurate lines coupled with gentle colour blending, resulting in a realistic style.
He primarily uses drawing pencils from Faber Castell, Caran D’Ache, and Derwent, all of which provide high-quality, environmentally sustainable materials with excellent colour permanence.
Dave enjoys working with watercolours. This medium allows him the freedom to apply a level of detail while also giving him the freedom to let colours flow, blend, run, and add texture in fluid ways, adding a softness to his work.
His choice of watercolour is primarily professional paints from Daniel Smith,Schminke, Sennelier, Winsor & Newton, and Daler Rowney.
The use of oil paints allows Dave to work in a variety of ways, applying detail more freely thanks to the flexibility and creamy texture of the medium. For his oil paintings, Dave generally uses Winsor & Newton’s Artisan range, which are water-soluble and eliminate the need for harmful chemicals, while achieving similar results to traditional oil paints.
Dave also works with acrylic paints, generally using Daler Rowney System 3 paints, which provide great quality and versatility.
Using artist-quality materials, quality papers, and canvas ensures that his work retains its vibrant colours for years to come.
When choosing papers and canvas, Dave considers both environmental impact and performance. He uses a variety of papers from Strathmore, Calirefontaine, Hahnemuhle, Winsor & Newton, amongst others.
